Thoughts from A Weeklong Solidarity Fast
by Alex Ambros of the Williams College Climate Justice Fast! Team
Some of my thoughts out of my daily journal originally written on December 4th midway through the weeklong fast in which myself and four other Williams College students participated. This 7 day fast was in addition to the rolling fast that has been going on since November 6th involving 45+ Williams College students and faculty fasting for one day each.
Much of the influence behind this set of thoughts was my childhood growing up split time between agricultural Vermont and wilderness in Alaska, discussions with classmates on college life, and listening to Xavier Rudd's cd "Food in the Belly" on repeat for about four days. The song Messages had become a sort of theme song after the second day with its lyrics, while expressing the importance of understanding the magnitude of our personal impacts, giving me a feeling of physical strength that helped to continue the fast.
Climate Justice Fast: One Small College’s Efforts
After a week of fasting, Sasha Macko, a junior at Williams College reflects upon her fast and looks expectantly forward at the progress of the international climate talks in Copenhagen. She is joined by four other students in her week-long fast, and around fifty other students and faculty accompany them for 24 hour fasts from November 6th to the December 18th.
The Ripple Effect
by Sara Dorsey of the Williams College Climate Justice Fast Team
My friends didn’t know about my decision until the day of the fast, so when I told them I wasn’t eating this past Thursday, they seemed a little shocked. They enjoy food just as much as I do (which is to say, a lot). Later in the day, one of them asked me why I was participating in the fast.
Climate Justice Fast begins at Williams College
This is Jen Rowe from Williams College's Climate Justice Fast Team. My first day of solidarity fasting began at 5:45 AM when I got up to cook for Log Lunch, Williams College's environmental lunch held every Friday. Cooking for the Log was different this week because I wasn't tasting everything along the way. I am usually a shameless cookie-dough pilferer.
I returned to the Log at noon to make an announcement about the Williams rolling fast. I must say that I was very tempted by the pecan cookies. But the kick I got from turning them down was worth it; I realized that I had a will that was strong enough to resist food.
