If you would individually like to support Climate Justice Fast!, we would like to ask you for something more than the usual online petition.

In fact, we don't want to ask you to pledge your support for our campaign in particular. We won't ask you to sign a petition for us, nor to write a letter of support. While these types of efforts are valuable and necessary, the truth is that they alone will not solve climate change. They are not enough.

Instead, we would like to ask you for what is actually required for us to win- to truly solve climate change. We ask you – and we really need you to think deeply about this – to commit yourself to the climate justice movement, and to maintain your commitment until our demands are met.

If you feel motivated to participate in the fast, you are welcome to join us, and you can contact us here. But more important is commitment.

Because the truth is this struggle will not be easy. It will mean setting aside personal ambitions. It will mean taking time off work, deferring from study, and changing your lifestyle. And it will mean finding the courage to step outside your comfort zone, and doing things you never thought yourself capable of.

This is what our forebears did for us during the great wars, the end of slavery, and during struggles for independence and political freedom, and for liberation. And this too is what we must do to protect our descendants from tragedy, and safeguard their future from climate catastrophe.

To do this:

  • Make climate-justice activism a central part of your life.
  • Meet and get to know your local climate-activist community – get in contact with local climate groups who understand the urgency of the problem.
  • Embrace arrest for taking direct non-violent action against the root causes of climate change – fossil fuels, overconsumption, deforestation, and intensive agriculture.
  • Learn about social movements and about the role of activism in creating change - read the biographies of Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, the Suffragettes, and other great historical activist leaders.
  • Find the courage to speak out, loudly and truthfully, and be honest about what we need to achieve and the scale of the problem.
  • Engage with politics and the media - ask your political leaders to join the movement for climate justice, to start helping rather than hindering.
  • Accept personal sacrifices, and lifestyle changes, where necessary, to achieve climate justice.
  • Do not give up, compromise, or rest until climate justice is achieved.
  • If you believe in prayer, pray.

We ask these things of you because this is what the planet needs of you, and to ask for anything less would be dishonest. This is truthfully what it is going to take for us to win.

Our fast is a demonstration of our readiness to embrace change, and of our refusal to accept a continuation of our current path. Climate change is a moral issue, an issue of conscience, and a challenge of enormous gravity. We wish to show the world that climate change is not just another issue, but is an unprecedented emergency, which calls for unprecedented, radical action.

If you would then like to provide us with messages of support, which we do appreciate very much, you can do so here.
